Lately, the same questions have been coming up in conversations with clients:
- How do AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini decide which local businesses to recommend?
- What should I change on my site to show up in those answers?
- How can I check what AI is saying about my business and fix it if it’s wrong?
These questions feel especially urgent heading into the holiday season. Many small business owners are navigating tighter budgets, and they’re unsure how AI is influencing which products and services get recommended. Improving visibility before the new year has quickly become a priority.
Earlier this year, I wrote about how small businesses can appear in AI search results. Today, I want to go a step further and look at what AI is learning from your marketing content and how to make sure it reflects your business the right way. Every page, post, and update teaches AI who you are and plays a role in whether it chooses to show you to potential customers.

If you’re short on time…
The key takeaway is that AI search is accelerating. With the rollout of the new Buy It In Chat feature, AI is becoming even more integrated into how people discover and purchase products and services.
If you can’t do a full refresh right now, start with a few high-impact updates:
- Update your Google Business Profile
- Add 3 new FAQs to your website
- Refresh your About page with clear, current details
Even small updates send strong signals to AI that your business is active, relevant, and trustworthy.
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?
Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overview read patterns across the web. They essentially “average” information from your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, directory listings, and mentions on other sites to produce a confident summary of who you are.
The more consistent your online information is, the easier it is for AI to understand and recommend your business.
For example, when I asked ChatGPT who Laser-View Technologies is, it described the company exactly the way we’ve written about it online. AI learns directly from the content you publish.
What should I change on my website to show up in AI search?
Here are two areas that make the biggest difference:
- Start (or restart) your blog. A blog gives you space to answer real customer questions, share success stories, and demonstrate local expertise. Even one helpful article a month can improve your visibility in both search and AI-generated summaries.
- Claim and update your listings. Make sure your business is verified and consistent across Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, and other directories. These listings are major data sources for AI tools. If you need help, our Local SEO team can take care of claiming and optimizing these profiles for you.
How can I check if AI is showing my business at all?
Open ChatGPT and search for your business name or your service (“window cleaning in Seattle,” “custom closets near Philadelphia,” etc.). See how it describes you.
Then check Gemini or Perplexity for comparison. Each tool pulls from slightly different data, so it’s worth seeing the full picture.
If you’re not showing up or the description feels outdated, it just means AI hasn’t learned enough yet. We can help with a free AI Visibility Audit to see how consistently your business appears and what improvements will help it stand out.
Quality Foam consistently shows in the top 3 results on Google Maps when searching for “spray foam” near Gap, PA.
What does it look like when AI gets it right?
When we optimized EnergySmart and Quality Foam’s online presence, we saw a clear shift: AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overview began recommending them more often.
That improvement came from clear, consistent messaging. Their websites, listings, and reviews all told the same story. When AI searched for insulation companies in their area, it found identical signals everywhere and repeated those back to customers.
