I just got my blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
I knew I was close to a promotion, but I didn’t know it was coming this week. Earning my blue belt has made me think about what the past few years on the mat have really taught me — how to shift my mindset from “I have to get this exactly right” to “I just need to keep showing up.”
It’s funny because that same lesson applies to marketing, especially for small businesses.
The Trap of Perfection
It’s easy for perfectionism to sneak in, whether you’re training or running a business.
On the mat, it looks like hesitating before every move. You spend so much time trying to look “right” that you forget to let your body flow.
In marketing, it looks like overthinking. Overediting every post, rewriting the same newsletter three times, or waiting for the perfect photo before you finally share your story.
When that happens, progress stalls. Content doesn’t get published. More meetings get added to the calendar. And the bigger picture — growth, connection, visibility — slips out of focus.
My first tournament – Good Fight, May 2024.
As Brazilian Jiu Jitsu world champion and instructor, Saulo Ribeiro once said:
“Don’t try to look good! It is not important that others are watching while you are failing. It only matters that you try.”
Ribeiro’s philosophy captures what both Jiu Jitsu and marketing have in common: progress comes from consistent practice, openness to new techniques, and the ability to adapt when things don’t go as planned.
You don’t need flawless technique on day one. You just need the discipline to show up, practice, and adapt. The more I focused on looking perfect, the less room I had to actually learn.
Why Consistency Wins
In both Jiu Jitsu and marketing, consistency is what builds a strong foundation.
The people who become black belts are the ones who keep showing up, day after day, and let progress unfold through repetition.
Marketing works the same way. Consistency builds:
- Skill — every post, email, and campaign teaches you something new.
- Trust — audiences notice when you show up regularly. It makes your brand feel reliable and confident.
- Momentum — small wins compound over time.
For small businesses, consistency is more than just a good habit. It’s a competitive edge.
While larger companies can afford to pause for perfect branding or campaigns, small businesses thrive by staying visible and connected. Every touchpoint counts, and consistency is what helps customers remember your name when they’re ready to buy.
I’ve seen this play out with clients time and again. Even when their content wasn’t perfect, the fact that they kept showing up made all the difference. A post that’s 80% polished but published always outperforms one that’s 100% perfect but still sitting in drafts.
How to Practice Consistency in Your Marketing
The best athletes build progress through small, repeatable habits, and I’ve found that marketing works the same way.
My second tournament – Good Fight, December 2024.
Think of these as your “daily drills” for building a strong foundation:
- Set a simple rhythm. Pick a posting or email schedule you can actually keep up with. Once a week is enough to start building discipline.
- Create systems. Use templates, content calendars, and repurposing to make consistency easier.
- Try to write clearly and authentically. A clear message that sounds like a human always beats a perfectly optimized AI-generated message.
- Track metrics that make sense. Measure growth in engagement, calls, and reviews.
- For specific metrics we recommend all small businesses track, check out this guide: Your Website Traffic Isn’t Telling the Whole Story—Here’s What to Measure Instead.
- Stay visible in AI search. More people are asking tools like ChatGPT and Gemini for local recommendations, so it’s imperative that your business is one of the answers they see. This is especially important if you rely on local customers.
These small, repeatable steps are what build marketing “muscle memory.” Over time, they make it easier to show up.
Just Keep Showing Up
In Jiu Jitsu, confidence comes from repetition. You learn by doing — by showing up, getting tapped out, and trying again until the movements become instinct.
Marketing works the same way. The more you post, engage, and try new things, the more natural it becomes. Progress doesn’t come from chasing perfection; it comes from staying consistent and present.
