What Google’s Done Before
For years, Google has been analyzing websites to determine their relevance to users who are searching for a business. It’s the results of this analysis that decide which website will pop up at the top of a user’s search results.
There are hundreds of factors that go into determining where your website will rank. Much of this has to do with SEO, including keyword usage and placement, image tags, etc. Google also factors in content length, how long it takes for a page to load, and how frequently you have updated your content. They want to make sure their users are getting exactly what they’re searching for!
Much of what Google will do with mobile-first indexing will remain the same. However, the focus will shift, based on the technology being used to perform searches.
What Google’s Doing Now
Google has implemented a “temporary” index called a mobile first index. This is their way of acknowledging that the majority of searches occur on mobile devices. The current index format is temporary as they work out the details of how it will be used going forward. However, if the growing mobile trend is any indicator, it’s safe to assume that a permanent mobile-first index won’t be too far off.
The mobile first index will take in the factors it used to consider when using a desktop site to determine rankings. However, now it will look at a mobile site before it moves on to desktop. If your mobile sites matches more criteria than one of your competitors’ mobile sites, you will be more likely to turn up at the top of a user’s search results, giving you a higher chance of converting them to a new customer.

What A Mobile First Index Could Mean For You
It’s surprisingly common to see small business owners without an effective mobile presence. Many of us are focused on the actual running of our business. We assume that having any sort of website is a step in the right direction, and oftentimes forget (or have no time available) to make sure that our content is optimized for mobile.

Look at it this way: Google is a business, just like you. Their job is to provide their “customers” (users performing searches) with a solution to their “problem” (search results that will give them what they need.)
Google’s customers are looking for smooth, friendly, intuitive experiences that also give them what they’re looking for. Since most customers are using their phones to find these solutions, Google understands that they need to push “products” (i.e. your website) that will make their customers happy and keep them coming back for more.
If you want your product to succeed, you have to transform it into what the customer is looking for. This is why it’s imperative that you optimize your content for mobile now.
