In a poll of today’s top Chief Marketing Officers, their resounding opinion was that mobile will become the top means of getting online content out to the masses in 2015. Recently-published “reports” agree: mobile search is slated to surpass desktop in 2015.
But there’s a caveat to this forecast: an increase in organic mobile traffic to your site will not necessarily mean an increase in mobile conversions.
The reason for this is simple: brands have not yet figured out how to fully optimize their content for mobile users. Here are a few key tips to help you avoid the most common mistakes in mobile marketing.
Formatting That Fits
We’ve all been there before: you’re using your phone to look up an article or find a bit of quick information, you click on the link, and the page loads…but everything is microscopic! It all looks like a miniature version of what you would see from a full-sized computer.
Be sure to format your content so that it looks clear and concise on a phone. Text should be sized so that it’s easy to read on a small screen, and avoid fancy fonts. Don’t use too many links (and if you must add links, make sure they’re large enough to click!), and consider the popular three-bar icon that a user can tap to expand your menu should they choose to access it (keeping it otherwise hidden so that it doesn’t draw away from your content).
Time Is Of The Essence
Did you know that Google performed a series of studies on mobile user behavior, and determined that the “perfect” loading time for a website on a mobile device is one second or less?
In today’s society of instant gratification, if a user doesn’t see what they’re looking for instantaneously, they’ll leave without ever sticking around long enough for your page to load all of the awesome services you can provide for them. Those extra five seconds your page takes to load on a mobile device could be costing you customers!
Excessive graphics, external links, and ads are just a few of the culprits that could be slowing down your load time. Consider removing them entirely and opting for a very simple, straightforward mobile site where the focus lies solely on your content.
What’s Your Goal?
Mobile users are much more goal-oriented than their desktop-using counterparts. Therefore, make sure your mobile site is formatted with this in mind; make your call-to-action front and center on your site, and make sure conversions are as simple as possible.
Don’t ask people to fill out elaborate forms or enter mailing addresses when they could simply enter their email address and wait for you to write to them. Keep all of your forms as short as possible, and make sure you have a clickable phone number listed so that potential customers can contact you with a quick tap of the finger.
The era of mobile marketing is upon us. It’s important to start your campaign of on the right foot, so you don’t find yourself stuck in the “stone age” of online marketing come 2015!
